Buyer Beware: Black Mould and Homeowners’ Insurance

Synopsis of Complaint:

The Consumer found black mould damage on a newly purchased home. The Consumer did not understand how he could be out of pocket when he should be fully protected with homeowners and title insurance.

Review by GIO:

GIO understood that the homeowner insurance was denied based on the damages not being sudden and accidental but over a long period of time.

Resolution:

GIO assisted Consumer in understanding that the mere presence of black mould is not one of the covered reasons of title insurance. Title and homeowner insurance are not all encompassing but limited to the coverages subject to any exclusions/exceptions, conditions, and schedules attached to the policy. The Consumer was satisfied with the explanation and appreciated GIO’s assistance.
