Water Damage & Insurance: What will my insurance cover?
To understand what water damage is covered by your insurance, it is important to understand the distinction between the different types of water damage coverage that are available in a personal property insurance policy.
Insurance 101: Ways you can invalidate your property insurance policy
No matter what type of home insurance policy you have, whether it be your primary home, a condo, or your vacation property, there are several ways that you can invalidate your policy.
Insurance 101: Ways you may be unintentionally putting your car insurance coverage at risk
Your auto insurance policy exists to protect you as an owner of a vehicle or as a driver, from risks associated with the responsibility of driving a car. There are ways you can inadvertently break the terms of your insurance contract which can result in your policy being invalidated.
How to read your insurance policy
An insurance policy is a contract that defines the obligations of both the insured (you the customer) and the insurer (your insurance company). Insurance policies sometimes contain terms that are hard to understand, and policies may be written in a confusing manner. Taking the time to understand your policies is well worth the effort.
Hail: What you need to know and how to prepare
As summer approaches, your property might be at risk of hail damage. It’s important to be prepared to minimize the potential damage, know what to do in case of an emergency, and know what help is available if your home, business, or automobile is damaged.
Here are some tips to protect your property against hailstorms this summer:
- Cover windows in safety film to help prevent glass from shattering.
- Buy a hail cover for your automobile and fold in its side mirrors in ahead of a hailstorm.
- Cover all outdoor furniture with tarps or other covers to prevent damage.
- Keep yourself updated on the weather and watch for hailstorm warnings. Listen for the latest weather updates in your area.
- Know what your insurance covers: It’s important to always read your insurance policies, so you know what coverage you have before you need it. Many disputes arise because consumers believe their insurance policy covers something when it does not.

Reminder: Review your insurance policies
June 28 is National Insurance Awareness Day, which serves as a reminder to review your insurance policies, so you know what coverage you have, before you need it.
When you are reviewing your insurance policies, evaluate changes on:
- Your property and possessions – this can include anything that may lead to a change in value, such as land evaluation increases or renovations.
- Vehicle use – check if there are any new drivers or any significant travel distance on your vehicle.
- Any significant changes to your business – this can include changes to location, products or services or any other major adjustments to your business.
